What are Geothermal Systems?

How Do Geothermal Systems Work?

A geothermal system works by moving air in and out of your home via the heat pump unit, exchanging it with air that’s been forced through the underground pipes. The pipes sit 20-feet below the surface, which is typically a constant temperature between 50 and 60 degrees. Using a mix of water, antifreeze and refrigerant, the geothermal system uses this constant temperature to adjust the climate of your home.

During the sweltering summer months, the geothermal system removes hot air from your home and deposits that energy into the ground using the pipe system. The system cools the air and returns it into your home via the heat pump. When the temperatures drop, the system performs th opposite action: it pumps warm air up from the ground loop to heat your home.

Can I Retrofit a Geothermal System?

Geothermal systems are often fit with new construction since they require significant excavation to install. Pipes sit either vertically or horizontally underground. But either way, there’s a lot of work that goes into the installation. However, a professional can install them retroactively.

They’re more expensive to install this way, but the benefits are worth it. The process also has a strong chance of ruining the landscaping where the installer buries the pipes.
